Dear Craughwell Families,

The 5 Essentials survey is open. Click here to begin the survey.  Students, teachers and parents across Illinois have the opportunity to participate in the fourth annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child’s school. As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child’s school.  We thank you for taking the time to complete this important survey.

Our annual It’s a Wonderful Night is on Tuesday, December 12 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Join us for an evening of holiday fun.  Santa’s Bookshop, pictures with Santa, cookie decorating, pizza, and a take home craft are just some of the activities to do!  Nothing Bundt Cakes will be available for purchase as well!

Our PAC requested I share their email in the Principals’ Post.  The PAC email address is  If you requested to be added to their email list in the past but have not received any emails, please check your spam folder.

Mrs. Mahalick’s Changing Families Group will begin on December 12.  This group will meet for 30 minutes once a week on Tuesdays during lunch.  The group is being offered to Troy Craughwell students of families that have been experienced a divorce.  Students will have opportunities to participate in group discussions, activities, and stories to help them understand their journey.  If you have any questions about the program, please contact Mrs. Mahalick at 815-577-7313.

Do you have a child interested in art, acting, chess, or engineering?  Classes for each of these topics will begin in January at Troy Craughwell.  The classes are one night a week after a school.  Classes include Young Rembrandts, Stage Stars, Chess Scholars, and Let’s Build It Engineering!  See the attached flyers for more information, to register, and contact information.

Tip from “The Bugsmasher”: It is important that children know their complete address and at least one phone number.  Many of the students know their street name but not their house address.  Please help your child learn and remember their complete address - house number, street, and city and state.  Students should also know at least one safe person’s phone by memory in case of an emergency.

Students have the opportunity to purchase a hot lunch and breakfast everyday at Troy Craughwell.  You may add funds to your child’s food service account electronically through your Skyward account or by sending money to school with your child(ren).  Students are served an “emergency lunch” once their food account goes below -$15.00.  There is no “emergency breakfast.”  Mrs. Barker or I call home with a courtesy reminder when a student’s account is near or past this -$15.00 threshold.  Please remember to check your child’s account balance regularly.  If you have any questions about adding funds electronically, please call the office at 815-577-7313.

Assistant Principal Steve Foster

I'm proud to say this is my sixth year serving as the assistant principal at Troy Craughwell.  I have the pleasure of serving and watching the Troy Craughwell students learn and grow from the time they enter our building as kindergartners until they leave us at the end of fourth grade.

This is my 25th year in education.  I taught first, second, and third grades before joining the Troy 30-C District as an Instructional Coach.  I was an Instructional Coach for five years before becoming the assistant principal at both Troy Craughwell and Troy Heritage Trail schools. The following year I became full time assistant principal at Troy Craughwell.

I received my Elementary Education degree at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, IL.  I obtained a master's degree in Teaching and Learning at University of St. Francis in Joliet, IL, and a second master's degree in Educational Administration at Governor's State University in University Park, IL.

In my free time I enjoy running 5Ks, spending time with family and friends, and going to live theatre.  I live in Chicago with my 16 year old Westie, Keiron.
